Know the Terms

Understanding Your Government Retirement Benefits

A simple guide to the terms you've heard throughout your career.

FERS
Federal Employees Retirement System

The retirement system for most federal employees hired after 1983. It combines a basic pension, Social Security, and the TSP.

TSP
Thrift Savings Plan

Your workplace retirement savings account, similar to a 401(k). Your investment and withdrawal choices matter in retirement.

MRA
Minimum Retirement Age

The earliest age you may qualify for certain FERS benefits, based on your birth year and years of service.

FEHB
Federal Employees Health Benefits

Your federal health coverage. It may continue into retirement if you meet the eligibility rules before you leave.

FEGLI
Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance

Your federal life insurance. Coverage amounts and costs can change after you retire.

CSRS
Civil Service Retirement System

The older federal retirement system for employees hired before 1984, with different pension and Social Security rules.

FERS Supplement
FERS Annuity Supplement

A temporary payment for some who retire before 62, designed to bridge the gap until Social Security age.

403(b) / 457(b)
Public-Sector Savings Plans

Workplace savings plans common for teachers, state, and local government employees.

RMD
Required Minimum Distribution

Minimum amounts you must withdraw each year from certain tax-deferred accounts once you reach a set age.

COLA
Cost-of-Living Adjustment

Periodic increases to some pension and Social Security payments to help keep pace with inflation.

Retirement Eligibility

When Can You Retire Under FERS?

For most federal employees, retirement eligibility depends on your age and years of creditable service.

Your MRA
Age 55–57
+
30 years
of service
Age 60

+
20 years
of service
Age 62

+
5 years
of service

These are common paths to an immediate, unreduced FERS pension. Other options, including MRA+10, deferred, disability, and special-category retirement (such as law enforcement and firefighters), follow different rules.

State & Local Employees

Ohio Teacher, State, or Local Government Employee?

Ohio public employees typically participate in a state retirement system instead of FERS, and many don't pay into Social Security through that job. Each system has its own pension formulas, service requirements, and plan choices.
